Chapter Twenty-Seven: Last Days of Adolescence

Image
Narrated by Apollo Masterson The bonus of having two older sisters who'd gone through university was that they were able to give advice on how to do well. One thing they'd recommended was to work on my research skills. It made sense, given that I was intending on a science degree and would need to know about the latest medical research. Less obvious was the need to work on my debating skills, as I wasn't going to spend my time arguing as a lawyer; but it was supposed to help with my public speaking skill nonetheless, as I'd be doing presentations as part of my degree. Although my favourite fitness activities were using the treadmill and the weights machine, I did also enjoy an occasional bit of yoga. It was a good opportunity to slow down and relax. After school one day, I came home feeling pretty angry. Even after football practice, I could still feel myself clenching my fists and teeth.  What's going on? Where did this come from? I asked myself in the bathroom m...

Chapter Twenty-Six: Summer Holidays

Image
Narrated by Artemis Masterson On the Monday following Erytheia and Xanthe's graduation, I decided to do some research on Foxbury Institute. I knew I wanted to do a Physics degree, and I was checking out what societies there were on offer. Both the Brainiacs and the Bot Savants seemed pretty tempting... "Hey there Artemis," Xanthe said behind me. "Checking out universities?" "The societies specifically," I replied.  "They're fun," Xanthe said, "and you can gain extra credit for your degree." "Yeah, that's useful," I said. "What would be your tips for doing well?" "Take notes in class," Xanthe replied. "They're really useful when it comes to revising for your exams. Also, building your research and debate skill helps for similar reasons." "Great, thank you!" I smiled. I wouldn't be going to university for a bit, but I liked to be prepared. That evening, I decided to h...

Chapter Twenty-Five: Preparing for the Real World

Image
Narrated by Xanthe Masterson Time flew past, and soon it was nearly time for our final terms. Each of us had joined various societies; Alexander had joined the Debate Guild, Erytheia the legendary "Secret Society", and I had decided to become part of the Art Society. Every so often we were given a list of tasks that we could complete to increase our standing within our societies. Naturally, most of mine revolved around painting, but sometimes they included taking photographs or playing a musical instrument. Aside from focusing on classes, I thought it would be a good idea to practise my potion-making skills, as I didn't actually know any. Stirring the viscous substance in the cauldron proved to be fairly taxing, though, and the heat from the flames also started getting to me. I gave up after a while, not having learnt anything; I had other things to do. I could always purchase a potion tome if I wanted to. On the Tuesday, I thought it would be a good idea to get ahead o...

Chapter Twenty-Four: A Taste of Independence (And A Little Studying)

Image
Narrated by Alexander Paraskevas And so, just a short time after leaving Copperdale High School, Erytheia, Xanthe and I moved to Honeydew Fields in Britechester. We moved in early, before term started, so that we could get used to where everything was before we started lessons.  Not long after we'd arrived, Evie Delgato came for a visit. "Hi, Evie! How's it going?" I asked. "Not too bad, thanks," she replied. "Which degree are you applying to?" "Language and Literature. Hopefully I manage to get into the distinguished degree, but it wouldn't be the end of the world if I don't." "No," she agreed. "I'm still not really sure what I'd like to do." "Well, taking a gap year is always a good idea," I said. "And if you decide not to go in the end, that's fine too. I just feel like university would give me some good story ideas." "Yeah, there aren't that many stories set at uni...
